What happens when your soul mate believes the complete opposite to you on a subject close to your heart? Molly Gunn talks to three couples who disagree about food, religion and staying up all night

I have been known to say in frustration, "Why don't you just eat meat?"' admits Helen Yuet Ling Pang, 40, who is married to Gary Corbin, 45, a vegetarian. 'My family are Hong Kong Chinese and definitely not vegetarian. There is a saying that the Cantonese will eat anything that moves. I'm not that extreme but I do enjoy meat.'

Gary, a property investor, hasn't eaten meat since he was 15. Not for ethical reasons – he just doesn't like the taste of it, or the smell. So much so that after the couple married in 2001 he refused to let meat in the house.
