Mariah Carey is likely to have some aching feet as her pregnancy progresses, and her husband isn’t going to let her suffer –- even if it means he has to be her personal shopper. Nick Cannon described a mini battle the pair had the day before, admitting to being flabbergasted by his wife’s shoe collection. “I come home yesterday to help my wife get ready for her video shoots and she has these 19-inch heels on,” he grumbled good-naturedly on a phone call with his wife, who called into his 92.3 WXRM-FM radio show “Rollin with Nick Cannon” on Friday. Carey defended herself, explaining the heels were only for a job. But, Cannon continued, “So I go into the closet searching for some flats for my wife … She got a lot of damn shoes — it’s like a frickin’ Macy’s. [And] Mariah Carey does not own one pair of flat shoes.” Carey corrects him, “To be fair, I had some boots from Aspen, some Dior boots.” “Ski boots!” Cannon argues. Carey says, “And then we did find some flats and then they were a regular ballet slipper, like a beige, and I was like, ‘I don’t think so.’” Cannon says he finally got her to wear flats -– in the form of ski boots. “Basically, I got Mariah Carey, the high-heel queen, to put on some flats. And this is amazing. I’m going shoe shopping today, needless to say, to buy you some flat shoes.” Carey seemed charmed by the idea, but it remains to be seen if the glam singer — who even travels with only heels in her suitcase — will actually be out and about in flats anytime soon. — Sara Hammel

Popular supplements glucosamine and chondroitin for combating joint pain do not work
Two popular supplements taken by millions of people around the world to combat joint pain, do not work, finds research published on today.
The supplements, glucosamine and chondroitin, are either taken on their own or in combination to reduce the pain caused by osteoarthritis in hips and knees.
The researchers, led by Professor Peter Jüni at the University of Bern in Switzerland, argue that given these supplements are not dangerous "we see no harm in having patients continue these preparations as long as they perceive a benefit and cover the cost of treatment themselves."
However, they add: "Health authorities and health insurers should not cover the costs for these preparations, and new prescriptions to patients who have not received treatment should be discouraged."
Osteoarthritis of the hip or knee is a chronic condition which is mainly treated with painkillers and anti-inflammatory drugs but these can cause stomach and heart problems, especially if used long-term. Treatments that not only reduce pain but slow the progression of the disease would be desirable, say the authors.
In the last decade, GPs and rheumatologists have increasingly prescribed glucosamine and chondroitin to their patients. And many individuals around the world have purchased them over the counter. In 2008 global sales of glucosamine supplements reached almost $2bn, which represents an increase of about 60% since 2003.
The authors say that results from existing trials about the effectiveness of glucosamine and chondroitin are conflicting. A large scale review of studies was therefore needed to determine whether or not the supplements work.
Professor Jüni and colleagues analysed the results of 10 published trials involving 3,803 patients with knee or hip osteoarthritis. They assessed changes in levels of pain after patients took glucosamine, chondroitin, or their combination with placebo or head to head.
They found no clinically relevant effect of chondroitin, glucosamine, or their combination on perceived joint pain or on joint space narrowing.
Despite this finding, some patients are convinced that these preparations are beneficial, say the authors. They suggest this might be because of the natural course of osteoarthritis or the placebo effect.
"Compared with placebo, glucosamine, chondroitin, and their combination do not reduce joint pain or have an impact on narrowing of joint space. Health authorities and health insurers should be discouraged from funding glucosamine and chondroitin treatment," they conclude.

Eating broccoli could guard against arthritis
Scientists at the University of East Anglia (UEA) are launching a groundbreaking new project to investigate the benefits of broccoli in the fight against osteoarthritis.
Initial laboratory research at UEA has found that a compound in broccoli called sulforaphane blocks the enzymes that cause joint destruction in osteoarthritis – the most common form of arthritis.
Broccoli has previously been associated with reduced cancer risk but this is the first major study into its effects on joint health.
With funding from both Arthritis Research UK and the Diet and Health Research Industry Club (DRINC), the £650,000 project will explore how sulforaphane may act to slow or prevent the development of osteoarthritis. It will prepare the way for the first patient trials and could lead to safe new ways of preventing and treating this painful disease.
Sulforaphane is a bioactive compound found in cruciferous vegetables, particularly broccoli. Eating broccoli leads to a high level of sulforaphane in the blood, but scientists don't yet know if the sulforaphane gets into joints in sufficient amounts to be effective. This is one of the things that the UEA team hopes to discover.
Osteoarthritis is the leading cause of disability in the UK where it affects around six million people. It is a degenerative joint disease which gradually destroys the cartilage in the joints, particularly in the hands, feet, spine, hips and knees of older people. There is currently no effective treatment other than pain relief or joint replacement.
Prof Ian Clark, of UEA's School of Biological Sciences, who is leading the research said: "The UK has an aging population and developing new strategies for combating age-related diseases such as osteoarthritis is vital – to improve the quality of life for sufferers but also to reduce the economic burden on society."
As part of the three-year project, the UEA team will also investigate the effects of other dietary compounds on osteoarthritis, including diallyl disulphide which is found in high amounts in garlic and also appears to slow the destruction of cartilage in laboratory models.

First Photo Of A Human Being Ever?
by Robert Krulwich
Back in September, we posted a set of old photos of Cincinnati daguerreotypes from 1848 where I caught a glimpse of two people at the Ohio River's edge. That would make them among the very first people ever to appear in a candid photograph. 1848 is a long time ago. They looked like a pair of men, one tall, the other short. They were standing with what looked like a bucket between them. I figured they were there to fetch some water. I then went on in my way to talk about cholera.
Well, an eagle-eyed reader who calls himself Hokumburg (and has a spectacular blog of his own, The Hokumburg Goombah) did his own investigation, enlarged our photo, and peered more closely:

New colon cancer test works without colonoscopy
By Maggie Fox, Health and Science Editor
(Reuters) - A new kind of test that finds evidence of colon cancer in the stool can also detect pre-cancerous growths, and could potentially be an alternative to colonoscopies, researchers reported on Thursday.
Exact Sciences' new test detected 87 percent of stage I, II and III colon tumors, which can be surgically removed, and found 64 percent of the biggest pre-cancerous growths, the researchers told a meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research.
It finds altered DNA that has either turned a cell cancerous, or has started the changes that lead to cancer.

Love Poems
I Use To Love Someone
by Stylz
I use to love someone
Someone use to love me,
Now I sit in silence in the dark
Wondering why you left me.
At times I’m glad you left
At times I’m sad you left,
But the best is
In my heart you never left.
Time has past
Like the sands in the glass,
Time has part
Like I’ve watched the grass.
I use to love someone
Someone use to love me,
Now I sit in silence in the dark
Wondering why you left me.

"Yes, we are pregnant, this is true!" Mariah told Billy of the baby that is due this spring. "It's been a long journey. It's been tough because I've been trying to hold on to a shred of privacy."
Mariah said that after months of media speculation, she had to speak out.

"At this point, there is no choice. I either talk or I hibernate," she said.
In the interview, Part 1 of which airs on Access Hollywood on Thursday, Mariah and Nick spoke candidly about their journey together, which included a terrifying miscarriage they experienced not quite two years ago. Mariah and Nick revealed they were getting ready to tell their friends and family the good news that they were expecting over the holidays back at that time, when they found out she was no longer pregnant.
"It kind of shook us both and took us into a place that was really dark and difficult," Mariah told Billy about the devastating miscarriage. "When that happened... I wasn't able to even talk to anybody about it. That was not easy."

After the miscarriage, Nick said that the experience has made them stronger as a couple and he admires Mariah's strength.
"It definitely brought us closer together," Nick told Billy. "It strengthened our relationship so much... She handled it so well."

Now that the word is out, Mariah and Nick say they plan to celebrate together and with their friends and family.
"The greatest gift on earth is a child," Nick said. "We've had names picked out from the first day we met and we want to stay true to that."

On Thursday's Access Hollywood Live, more of Billy's exclusive interview with Mariah and Nick aired, where the couple spoke about their pain following the miscarriage.
"Literally the day we were supposed to travel to Aspen, we had an ultrasound with the OB/GYN and unfortunately that was the time where he said, 'I'm sorry, but this, you know, the pregnancy is unsuccessful,' and that moment for me, even though it was emotional for both of us, that's when I really saw the strength in this woman right here," Nick recalled. "To see, literally, not only did she handle it so well... and then to get on a plane and have to spend Christmas with friends and family?"
"We had really to absorb this and take it in," Mariah said.
"And that's what I said, like her strength would literally be during the day so festive and smiling, obviously for cameras, and spending time with everyone and, you know, literally, that night crying herself to sleep," Nick continued.
Billy also asked Mariah about the stress she was under after enduring so much speculation about a possible pregnancy.
"I wonder after losing the first child, was there a part of you -- because of the media pressure -- that felt like, 'Can I do this?''... that you had to get pregnant or else you would have failed in some way?" Billy asked.
"I mean obviously, that would be someone's... you would imagine that that would enter someone's mind," Mariah explained. "When that happened and I wasn't able to even talk to anybody about it, that was not OK. That was not easy. I've never really been a very forthcoming person about my personal stuff. Like, it's just not my thing... Why do I have to talk about this in front of the world?' It's a little strange."
Mariah's new CD, "Merry Christmas II You," is due out on November 2.

LimeWire shutdown just a temporary inconvenience for filesharers
History shows the injunction against the LimeWire website is unlikely to be a game-changer
LimeWire's launch predates the Apple iPod by 19 months and the iTunes store by 23 months. Today millions of users accustomed to illegally sharing copyrighted content over the past decade will be temporarily inconvenienced after a permanent injunction against LimeWire's illegal peer-to-peer filesharing operation.
The New York federal court ruling is a significant, but not game-changing legal victory for a battered music industry. But LimeWire as we know it is dead. As with the closure of other peer-to-peer networks such as Napster before it, LimeWire must now go legit.
The permanent injunction follows a four-year legal battle brought by music industry heavyweight, the Recording Industry Association of America. The level of damages faced by the site will be revealed in January – the RIAA says LimeWire has single-handedly cost the music industry hundreds of millions of dollars.
Ripples from the ruling will reach the internet's innumerable other peer-to-peer networks. But history says it will do no more. The internet is awash with people sharing things, legally and illegally.
"It's not about the technology, it's a paradigm shift," says Mark Mulligan, an analyst specialising in music at Forrester Research. And the notion that you can eradicate illicit filesharing if you eradicate particular networks is a fallacy.

China's Tianhe-1A takes supercomputer crown from US
Tianhe-1A capable of sustained computing of 2.507 petaflops a second – 1.4 times faster than Cray XT5 Jaguar
China has overtaken the US as home of the world's fastest supercomputer. Tianhe-1A, named for the Milky Way, is capable of sustained computing of 2.507 petaflops – equivalent to 2,507 trillion calculations – each second.
The US scientist who maintains the international rankings visited it last week and said he believed it was 1.4 times faster than the former number one, the Cray XT5 Jaguar in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. That topped the list in June with a rate of 1.75 petaflops a second.
The US is home to more than half of the world's top 500 supercomputers. China had 24 in the last list, but has pumped billions of pounds into developing its computational ability in recent years. The machines are used for everything from modelling climate change and studying the beginnings of the universe to assisting aeroplane design.
Housed in the northern port city of Tianjin, near Beijing, Tianhe-1A was developed by the National University of Defence Technology. The system was built from thousands of chips made by US firms – Intel and Nvidia – but domestic researchers developed the networking technology that allows information to be exchanged between servers at extraordinary speeds.

Philippines now 'PH,' not RP, says DFA
The Philippines has long been known by the initials "RP" for "Republic of the Philippines."
However, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) says from now on, it will be using the initials "PH" or "PHL" when referring to the Philippines.
The DFA says the move complies with the country codes set by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
The DFA said the use of the designated country codes PH or PHL would “avoid the ambiguity and confusion with the use of the initials RP."
“The long standing usage of the initials RP is not in accordance with ISO codes, leading to ambiguous initials that can also refer to other countries," the DFA noted.
In a department order issued on October 20, Foreign Affairs Secretary Alberto Romulo directed the DFA’s 67 embassies, 23 consulates general and four permanent missions to use the initials PH or PHL in their dispatches and reports to the Home Office.

Mexican hitmen kill 15 in latest massacre
(Reuters) - Suspected drug hitmen shot dead 15 people at a car wash in western Mexico on Wednesday, the third massacre in just a few days, putting new pressure on President Felipe Calderon to stop the growing violence.
The gunmen, in three SUVs, opened fire on staff and customers in the car wash on the outskirts of the city of Tepic in Nayarit state, provoking panic as the victims, all workers at the car wash, collapsed to the ground.
"The workers were all men; they were washing cars when the gunmen, probably members of organized crime, drove up in SUVs (sport utility vehicles) and started opening fire," said a spokeswoman at the Nayarit state attorney general's office.
Photographs in local media showed bodies slumped on the roadside with pools of blood around their heads.
The multiple murder is the third since Friday when gunmen shot and killed 14 people and injured a 9-year-old boy at a party in Ciudad Juarez across from El Paso, Texas. On Sunday, gunmen in Tijuana killed 14 people at a rehabilitation center in the city bordering San Diego, California.

The gunmen, in three SUVs, opened fire on staff and customers in the car wash on the outskirts of the city of Tepic in Nayarit state, provoking panic as the victims, all workers at the car wash, collapsed to the ground.

What the e-Nose Knows
A whiff of the future.

Imagine a Breathalyzer-type device that could detect cancer in its earliest stages, by smell alone without invasive blood draws and body scans. It's not a new idea. Centuries ago, Hippocrates linked patients' musty breath with liver disease. And a handful of studies suggest that dogs, with their sensitive snouts, can be trained to sniff out tumors.
This puff-of-air diagnostic tool isn't a pipe dream. It already exists, courtesy of iSense, a company founded by Kenneth Suslick, PhD '78, and Paul Rhodes, MS '83.
"Cancer cells are a little different in their metabolism," Rhodes explains. Their rapid reproduction creates byproducts, some of which are airborne, producing a distinct odor undetectable by humans.
Preliminary results of a study conducted by the Cleveland Clinic suggest that the iSense device can correctly diagnose early-stage lung cancer in three out of four patients. Other health conditions that might be put to the smell test include pulmonary disease, diabetes and kidney disease. In addition to health care, the technology could have implications for homeland security, food safety and more. Rhodes expects iSense's medical-diagnostic device will be commercially available in 2011. "Every doctor's office on earth could end up having one," he says.

The Sex Scholar
Decades before Kinsey, Stanford professor Clelia Mosher polled Victorian-era women on their bedroom behavior—then kept the startling results under wraps.
By Kara Platoni
In 1973, historian Carl Degler was combing the University archives, gathering research for a book on the history of the family. Sifting through the papers of Dr. Clelia Duel Mosher, who taught in Stanford's hygiene department around the turn of the 20th century, he came across a mysteriously bound file. Degler nearly put it aside, figuring it was a manuscript for one of Mosher's published works, mostly statistical treatises on women's height, strength and menstruation. But instead, he recalls, "I opened it up and there were these questionnaires"— questionnaires upon which dozens of women, most born before 1870, had inscribed their most intimate thoughts.

Love Poems
It Was Always You
by sgtkiwi
We were childhood friends
Looking ahead at life
One wanting a Husband
The other a Wife
We waited patiently
For many, many years
For one true love
Through many shed tears
Travelling through life
We learned on the way
What love should be
And how far we'd strayed
I had thought of you often
And the chances I'd passed
You were the only possibility
Of true love that could last
But it was too late
I'd travelled too far
But then there you were
And now, here you are
Life's moved full circle
The timing finally right
My dream's to hold you
For the rest of your life
Who would have thought
In the search of a love so true
That when the timing was right
It was always you
8 Habits That Destroy Marriage
We'll say it straight up: There's no good reason in the world to hang onto these habits. They aren't helping.
1. Nagging, nagging, nagging. We know about the squeaky wheel, but complaining loud and long gets you only short-term gains and builds up powerful discontent on your spouse's side.
2. Blaming, criticizing, and name-calling. These tactics belittle the person you promised to love, honor, and cherish; let you play angel to his or her devil; and don't address the responsibility you both share for your
marital happiness.
3. Bullying, rudeness, and selfishness. These ugly power plays tell your partner that he or she doesn't count at all in your eyes.
4. Peacekeeping and passive placating. A "whatever you say, Dear" attitude may keep your home quieter but leaves you in the martyr's role. You'll end up angry, defensive, and a drudge. What fun is that?
5. Deploying logic all the time. Life isn't the starship Enterprise; playing the dispassionate Mr. Spock not only cuts you off from your feelings but also subtly tells your spouse that his or her feelings don't count either.
6. Throwing up distractions. You're just having fun, right? Think again. Being hyperactive, fooling around all the time, and refusing to focus—in conversation or in life—often is an attempt to avoid intimacy or difficult issues, which can be horribly frustrating for your mate.
7. Stonewalling. Another stall maneuver, stonewalling stops arguments and constructive discussions cold. Not much can happen when one spouse just won't talk about it.
8. Making unilateral decisions about the big things. Sometimes you have to pick the bathroom paint color on your own. But if you're making major decisions about your money, your time, your kids, and your family life, you're acting without accountability and cutting off the possibility of joint decision-making and deeper intimacy.

Eight Flirting Tips to Bring a Shy Guy Out of His Shell
With a shy guy you have to be more available and flirty, take the lead more often and maybe even give him the first kiss. Keep in mind, however, that he needs to be responding very positively to each of your moves. If he doesn’t, end the relationship because you don’t want to be stuck in a fantasy where you are crazy about someone who is truly not into you. Now here are eight dating tips to bring a shy guy out of his shell:
1. See him when he is in his element.
If he plays sports, go watch. Be there as he finishes a marathon. If he is giving a talk, try to arrange to be in the audience. When a shy guy is in his element he will be at the height of his charisma and at a high point of self-confidence. Bottom line: he will be feeling very good about himself. And this means he will feel empowered to make a move on you if he is really interested.
2. Compliment him.
Notice something about him or what he is doing that you really like and praise it with a specific and sincere compliment. For example, That blog you wrote about going to Sicily was hysterically funny and made me want to go! This builds his self-esteem and will tend to get him to talk more about the topic. And it may even get him to show off a bit for you.

What Can the US Do To Stop WikiLeaks?
By JOSEPH FITSANAKIS | intelNews.org |
Ever since whistleblower site WikiLeaks published 77,000 classified US military documents on the war in Afghanistan, several pundits have urged US government agencies, including the Pentagon, to take action. Late last week, former George W. Bush speechwriter Marc Thiessen urged the Pentagon to unleash its “cyber capabilities to prevent WikiLeaks from disseminating those materials”. Some columnists have even suggested that US intelligence services should “come up with an up-to-date photo of [WikiLeaks founder Julian] Assange and distribute it to [...] SEAL sharpshooters”. Pentagon representatives have also stepped up their rhetoric, warning that “[i]f doing the right thing isn’t good enough for [WikiLeaks], we will figure out what alternatives we have to compel them to do the right thing”.

WikiLeaks Ready to Drop a Bombshell on Russia
Moscow - The Kremlin had better brace itself for a coming wave of WikiLeaks disclosures about Russia, the website's founder, Julian Assange, told a leading Moscow newspaper Tuesday.
"We have [compromising materials] about Russia, about your government and businessmen," Mr. Assange told the pro-government daily Izvestia. "But not as much as we'd like... We will publish these materials soon."
He then dropped a hint that's likely to be nervously parsed in Russia's corridors of power: "We are helped by the Americans, who pass on a lot of material about Russia," to WikiLeaks, he said.
Russian security experts say there probably won't be anything comparable to the huge archives of US military secrets from the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq that the website has recently published.

New snub-nosed monkey discovered in Northern Myanmar
An international team of primatologists have discovered a new species of monkey in Northern Myanmar (formerly Burma.) The research, published in the American Journal of Primatology, reveals how Rhinopithecus strykeri, a species of snub-nosed monkey, has an upturned nose which causes it to sneeze when it rains.
Field biologists led by Ngwe Lwin from the Myanmar Biodiversity And Nature Conservation Association and supported by an international team of primatologists from Fauna & Flora International (FFI) and the People Resources and Biodiversity Foundation, discovered the new species during the nationwide Hoolock Gibbon Status Review in early 2010. Hunters reported the presence of a monkey species with prominent lips and wide upturned nostrils.

New insight into links between obesity and activity in the brain
Scientists have revealed that an anti-obesity drug changes the way the brain responds to appetising, high-calorie foods in obese individuals. This insight may aid the development of new anti-obesity drugs which reduce the activity in the regions of the brain stimulated by the sight of tasty foods.
Researchers at the University of Cambridge discovered that the anti-obesity drug sibutramine reduced brain responses in two regions of the brain, the hypothalamus and the amygdala, both of which are known to be important in appetite control and eating behaviour. Their findings are reported today in The Journal of Neuroscience.
Professor Paul Fletcher, from the Department of Psychiatry and the Behavioural & Clinical Neuroscience Institute at the University of Cambridge and one of the paper's authors, said: "Currently, there are few drugs that effectively help patients to lose weight. Developing new pharmaceuticals is expensive and risky. However, our findings suggest that we may be able to use brain imaging and psychological tests to make better predictions of which drugs are likely to work."

No Fishing
An avid ice fisherman moved a short distance onto the ice and began to chop a hole.
Suddenly a voice boomed out from above: "There are no fish in there."
The man looked around but didn't see anyone.
However, he heeded the advice and moved to a different spot on the ice to chop another hole.
Again, he heard the loud voice say: "There are no fish in there."
The fisherman still couldn't see anyone.
But he accepted the fishing tip and began chopping a third hole farther out.
"There are no fish in there,' resounded the voice louder than ever.
Still there was no one in sight, and by now, the fisherman was becoming afraid. "Are you God?" he asked meekly.
"No," the loudspeaker thundered. "I own this skating rink."

Love me with your eyes so blue
Gaze at me with feeling
Love me as a lover would
Leave my senses reeling
Love me please with all your heart
Beyond all scope and measure
Love me so and it will be
My lifes most sacred treasure
Love me more than life itself
My heart is in your hands
Love me as if I am the one
You see in all your plans
Love me till you finally count
The stars in nightimes sky
Love me till emotions rise
And bring a tender sigh
Love me with each breath you take
Inhale me at your leisure
Love me with a passion that
Brings you uncommon pleasure
Love me with your very soul
With all you have to give
Love me deep as if you know
You need my love to live
And lastly love me in the way
That this man so loves you
And I will love you beyond death
And to this love be true

Pacquiao trainer Roach dismayed over Baguio training camp
Freddie Roach was straight to the point.
In his view, in the close to 10 years that he’s been training Manny Pacquiao for a fight, this one, against the biggest opponent the Filipino ring icon faces in his 15-year boxing career, has been the worst training camp they ever had.
While the four-time Trainer of the Year has tried to be discreet before, Roach voiced out his sentiments this time, saying that too many distractions impaired Pacquiao’s preparations for his November 13 title showdown against Mexican Antonio Margarito.
“The thing is, overall, I think it’s the worst training camp we ever had, yes," Roach said in an interview with Max Boxing, enumerating the distractions that hounded their training camp, from Pacquiao’s six-hour drives to Manila from Baguio during weekends, the hours spent practicing songs for his post-fight party in Texas, the nightly basketball, and his travel to San Diego for a charity event less than 24 hours after arriving in Los Angeles.
“The thing is, it was just too many distractions," Roach disclosed. “When Manny Pacquiao trains, nobody trains better. So, really, we didn’t have a bad training camp. He just wasn’t very consistent."
And so the 50-year-old trainer expressed how pleased he is to be back in the confines of his Wild Card gym, where he said he’ll try in the remaining two weeks to whip the 31-year-old Filipino southpaw into the best shape against the 5-foot-11 Mexican from Tijuana.
“We’re within striking distance, and these two weeks are going to help us a lot," he added.
In his first training day in Los Angeles, Pacquiao went 12 rounds working the mitts with Roach at the famed sweatbox on Vine St, although the two-hour training was strictly closed to the public, including members of the media.
“I had to close it down completely," Roach said later. “I need his focus. The conditioning stuff, it’s all there right now. It’s just that his focus is not 100 percent. He’s still got Congress on his mind and so forth.
“Now, he’s in Los Angeles, we know the fight's close. He’s going to focus on the fight and the game plan."
Pacquiao will hold a media day at the gym on Wednesday (Thursday in Manila), which would be the only time the training of the world’s top pound-for-pound fighter will be open to the public.
And yes, even popular figures such as Pacquiao die-hards, like actors Mark Wahlberg, Christian Bale and Mario Lopez, won’t be exempted.
“They want to come, but I’m going to have to say no," said Roach. – JVP/KY, GMANews.TV

Calculating The Odds That Life Could Begin By Chance
By Dave Deamer
Many people, perhaps most, hate the idea that life might depend on chance processes. It is a human tendency to search for meaning, and what could be more meaningful than the belief that our lives have a greater purpose, that all life in fact is guided by a supreme intelligence which manifests itself even at the level of individual molecules?
Proponents of intelligent design believe that the components of life are so complex that they could not possibly have been produced by an evolutionary process. To bolster their argument, they calculate the odds that a specific protein might assemble by chance in the prebiotic environment. The odds against such a chance assembly are so astronomically immense that a protein required for life to begin could not possibly have assembled by chance on the early Earth. Therefore, the argument goes, life must have been designed.

America – The Grim Truth
Americans, I have some bad news for you:
You have the worst quality of life in the developed world – by a wide margin.
If you had any idea of how people really lived in Western Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and many parts of Asia, you’d be rioting in the streets calling for a better life. In fact, the average Australian or Singaporean taxi driver has a much better standard of living than the typical American white-collar worker.
I know this because I am an American, and I escaped from the prison you call home.
I have lived all around the world, in wealthy countries and poor ones, and there is only one country I would never consider living in again: The United States of America. The mere thought of it fills me with dread.
Consider this, you are the only people in the developed world without a single-payer health system. Everyone in Western Europe, Japan, Canada, Australia, Singapore and New Zealand has a single-payer system. If they get sick, they can devote all their energies to getting well. If you get sick, you have to battle two things at once, your illness and the fear of financial ruin. Millions of Americans go bankrupt every year due to medical bills, and tens of thousands die each year because they have no insurance or insufficient insurance. And don’t believe for a second that rot about America having the world’s best medical care or the shortest waiting lists: I’ve been to hospitals in Australia, New Zealand, Europe, Singapore, and Thailand, and every one was better than the “good” hospital I used to go to back home. The waits were shorter, the facilities more comfortable, and the doctors just as good.
This is ironic, because you need a good health system more than anyone else in the world. Why? Because your lifestyle is almost designed to make you sick.
Let’s start with your diet: Much of the beef you eat has been exposed to fecal matter in processing. Your chicken is contaminated with salmonella. Your stock animals and poultry are pumped full of growth hormones and antibiotics. In most other countries, the government would act to protect consumers from this sort of thing; in the United States, the government is bought off by industry to prevent any effective regulations or inspections. In a few years, the majority of all the produce for sale in the United States will be from genetically modified crops, thanks to the cozy relationship between Monsanto Corporation and the United States government. Worse still, due to the vast quantities of high-fructose corn syrup Americans consume, fully one-third of children born in the United States today will be diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes at some point in their lives.

Asian Neanderthals, Humans Mated
Early modern humans mated with Neanderthals and possibly other archaic hominid species from Asia at least 100,000 years ago, according to a new study that describes human remains from that period in South China.
The remains are the oldest modern human fossils in East Asia and predate, by over 60,000 years, the oldest previously known modern human remains in the region.
SEE ALSO: Prehistoric Jewelry Reveals Neanderthal Fashion Sense
The fossils -- a chin and related teeth -- belonged to a modern human that also featured more robust Neanderthal-type characteristics, indicates the study, published in the latest Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
Co-author Erik Trinkaus, who is one of the world's leading experts on Neanderthals, told Discovery News that the new findings mean "there was mating between these 'archaic' and 'modern' groups across Asia, and not just in Europe and the remainder of Africa."
"Of more interest than who had sex with whom is the fact that modern humans had spread across southern Eurasia by 100,000 years ago, and yet archaic humans remained across the more northern areas, and even displaced the modern humans in Southwest Asia for an additional 50,000-70,000 years," added Trinkaus, a professor of physical anthropology at Washington University in St. Louis. "It argues for very little adaptive advantage on the part of these modern humans."

I Don't Want to Understand
by ealamillo
I’m done I’ll yell as loud as I can
You see I can’t believe it, I don’t want to understand
There is no excuse
After all that I put up with
Take your promises and throw them away
I’m sorry I refuse to stay
It hurts; it hurts so bad that I cannot breathe
But it’ll hurt more to stay then if I were to leave
So goodbye is all I can say
Another wasted relationship, another wasted day
You say that you left everything for me
But you were the one that caused this
It hits me right at the heart
For you I would have moved mountains, isn’t that a start
Or an end?
I’m done I’ll yell as loud as I can
You see I can’t believe it, I don’t want to understand

Remember You
by brribrrianna
I know I really shouldnt hate you. Why should I? Because you left. You left in the middle of everything. And all you left me with is guilt, and hurt. And wishing you were still here. And you left me in this place, this place of hate. Where everythings wrong, and you have to find happiness, it isnt just there. Im so tired of crying. Crying about being alone, about wanting to see you when I cant. And I cant even find a way out. And when I say "Im fine" or "Dont worry about me" people believe me, and they walk away. Just like you. But you didnt walk away. You didnt mean to, atleast. So if it isnt your fault, why do I hate you? Why do I waste my tears over you? Why didnt you stop me?! But soon I cant remember you. I cant remember your smile, your laugh, your touch. And Ive given up. Thats what hurts more than anything, knowing that after trying THIS hard, your still gone. Im ashamed with myself, I shouldve tried harder. But your fading. Pictures arent enough, memories disappear. And faster than I thought, your gone completely. Gone from here. Gone from me. I feel like Im standing on the corner of the street in the dark, with rain pouring harder than it usually does. Rains falls the hardest on the people who deserve the sun most. And you were the first person who made me feel special, and loved. And beautiful. I still cant decide if its possible to care too much. And if thats the problem, its not a problem at all. People say your not really living until youve found something to die for. Well, what if that something is gone? I want you to know that everyday I dont see you, a little piece of me breaks away. And maybe someday, Ill be completely gone.
And I dont need to remember you anymore.
Complex mathematical problem solved by bees
Scientists at Queen Mary, University of London and Royal Holloway, University of London have discovered that bees learn to fly the shortest possible route between flowers even if they discover the flowers in a different order. Bees are effectively solving the 'Travelling Salesman Problem', and these are the first animals found to do this.
The Travelling Salesman must find the shortest route that allows him to visit all locations on his route. Computers solve it by comparing the length of all possible routes and choosing the shortest. However, bees solve it without computer assistance using a brain the size of grass seed.

Calculating The Odds That Life Could Begin By Chance

Joke
Onions And A Christmas Tree
A family is sitting around the supper table. The son asks his father, "Dad, how many kinds of breasts are there?
The father, surprised, answers, "Well, son, there are three kinds of breasts. In her twenties, a woman's breasts are like melons, round and firm. In her thirties to forties, they are like pears, still nice but hanging a bit. After fifty, they are like onions."
"Onions?"
"Yes, you see them and they make you cry."
This infuriated the wife and daughter. So the daughter said " Mom, how many kinds of penises are there?"
The mother, surprised, smiles and looks at her daughter and answers, "Well dear, a man goes through three phases. In a man's twenties, his penis is like an oak tree, mighty and hard. In his thirties and forties, it is a birch, flexible but reliable. After his fifties, it is like a Christmas tree."
"A Christmas tree?"
"Yes, dead from the root up and the balls are for decoration only!"

When Angel Start To Cry
by vecocica
I hope you'll understand my decision to let you go even it's just deceiving. I apologize if I’ve already hurt you and open your wound, sorry I couldn't heal that wound.
I’m sorry that I’ve already being a sharp knife, and stab right back at you truly do regret it, but everything seems out of my control.
I would rather stay away from you, and get closer with my friends.
But these are a things that you should know, when I was talking with you, everything become brighter than before, and when we was talking together, everything become clearly that we just can't be friend anymore and our story is not a fairy tale right? We’re ain't together no matter what happen now, or tomorrow.
And there's a story goes, when angel start to cry
She drop her tears on her beautiful face, because she couldn't fly anymore
Her wings are falling to be part of two, she couldn't fix it and
When angel start to cry, the world it's seem stop running from its axis
The wind wouldn't whisper a blissful all flower wouldn't be blossom
Venus and Mars will disappear from galaxy just because you stop to smile to this world
And when angel starts to cry
The Sun wouldn't give its light for this world
There isn’t a beautiful rainbow and starlight at night
There isn’t a beautiful thing in this world anymore
All there's left is just a darkness and our life would be trampled on with sorrow
So, please an angel, would you mind not to cry anymore?
Would you mind smiling again ? because your face is a hidden treasure.
Would you mind replacing all your wounds and heal it let us heal your wounds not him...
Coz there's a question for him: You just like an angel who covered with a dark cloud Or you an Evil who pretend to be an angel?

Céline Dion Gives Birth to Healthy Twin Boys
By Marisa Laudadio
Céline Dion is a mom again – times two!
The singer, 42, gave birth to fraternal twin boys on Saturday at St. Mary’s Medical Center in West Palm Beach, Fla., at 11:11 a.m. and 11:12 a.m., her rep tells PEOPLE exclusively.
"Celine, René and their son René-Charles are thrilled," says her rep.
One of the babies weighed in at 5 lbs., 4 oz., with the other at 5 lbs., 10 oz.
Dion's doctor, Ronald Ackerman, said at a press conference outside the hospital Friday evening that the delivery, done via C-section, went as expected. He also revealed that the twins were both born with a good amount of hair.
The twins are healthy, says Dion's rep, but will spend the next few days in an incubator because they were born premature.
"Celine is resting now and they plan to discuss what to name the boys when she wakes up," the rep adds. "René-Charles has been to the hospital to visit his brothers and is just so excited they are here."

Love Poem
When You Left Me
by Miss.Dea
With my heart broken
With The words left unspoken
Im Dying
My soul is crying
With no one beside me
The Pain its killing me
I want to smash out my heart
Coz that life broke us apart
I wanna scream
Coz nobody will hear
Nobody can feel my pain
Its Driving me insane
My life dont have sens anymore
Withouth the one that i adore
all that i have is sadness and emptiness
And remain just lonliness
I lost everything
The one that was for me everything
I dont have power to go on
All that I Have Is Gone.
Love Story
Love at First Sight
by jyotikajoy
Many couples at my age go out to eat, watch a movie, or study together. However, in my case, I cannot see, touch, or hug my boyfriend because distance has separated us. Even though we have only seen each other in person for seven days and talked on the internet for one year, we still have a very close bond that has not been broken to this day. Many things have separated us, but the one that hurts the most is distance. We have overcome many obstacles to stay in contact with each other and have been through many brick walls. We do not plan to stop until we are finally together at last.
I met him in a after school program in the Museum of Natural History next to central park in the middle of Manhattan in New York City. I sat in a high chair in a cold room with white tables with about 15 to 20 students in the class with me. I had my best friend, Mimi, from high school with me. I saw him from across the room sitting their in a sharp business suit with a blue tie, white shirt, and black pants. He also had an ID tag around his neck which he used for coming in to his school. Once the teacher said his name, I never forgot it. “Devin, please tell the class what a GPS system is,” said the teacher. After that day, all I did was talk to my friend about how tall, tan, and handsome Devin was. On the second day of the program, I talked to him and we both went out to central park for a walk. As we were walking, Devin told me his views on love, war, life, faith, and destiny; however, I was too busy dazing into his eyes and trying to fight of a strong urge to touch him than listening to what he was saying. After the long and exhausting walk, we said good bye to each other and I jumped into his arms to hug him. Although he was skinny, I could feel his muscles on his back. He smelled like expensive cologne (which wasn’t strong and you couldn’t smell it until you got close enough to him) and his clothes were so soft. I have never forgotten his gentle touch when he put his arms around me. I felt so comfortable and safe like I was meant to be there.
Three months after meeting him…I moved in June of 2007. I left the big city of New York, where the city never sleeps and ended up in a place where people’s average bedtime is 9 p.m. “Welcome to the middle of no where,” I kept telling myself. “Thanks a lot dad! I am in the middle of no where, and I am going to a stupid school that reminds me of High School Musical” I exclaimed to my father once I came to Fort Wayne, Indiana. Though, the sad part wasn’t the fact that I lost all of my friends, it was the fact that I lost the chance to see Devin.
We kept talking for months about life, emotions, experiences, goals, and about ourselves. After a long year of talking to him, he finally asked me if I would be his girlfriend on a Sunday night, on April 7, 2008 at 12:00 a.m. Of course, I said “yes!”
As we continued to talk I realized he was very deep, trustworthy, and dependable. He made me feel incredibly comfortable and he was so easy to talk to and share my feelings with. He made my heart melt and took my breath away when he wrote me poems. I have never met anyone like him and nor will I meet anyone like him again. Since I couldn’t see him, I talked to him on the phone everyday and every chance I got. My mother and father, being traditional Indian parents did not think it was right for me to be talking to a boy. They took my phone and computer away many times to limit the time I spent with him. I often cried when I was not able to talk to him and I laid in my cold bed at night thinking about the sound of his voice and how happy it would make me feel if I could hear him say “I love you” one more time to help me fall asleep.
Now it is 2010 and it is getting close to our second year anniversary. I do not get to see him often and I still cry when I miss him a lot. I have made some changes to overcome our obstacles. For example, we both have a webcam, so we technically can see each other. I also bought a back up cell phone just in case my parents take my other cell phone away. Every obstacle we have faced just makes us stronger as a couple and even though we are 600 miles apart, our relationship is stronger than many of the people we see in our age group and we cherish every moment we get have together. We have decided to spend the rest of our lives together and get married. Can you hear the song “Here comes the bride?”
Rangers Overpower Yankees to Gain Series Berth
The Rangers celebrated after winning the American League Championship Series on Friday.
By BEN SHPIGEL
ARLINGTON, Tex. — The Yankees lavished $243.5 million on starting pitching two winters ago, and the splurge returned them to glory. It restored that fall ritual in New York, the championship parade, but it might have had an expiration date. The rotation started to splinter in the second half this year, and it toppled an overmatched playoff opponent in the first round, but it was no match for the Texas Rangers, who outpitched, outhit and outplayed the Yankees all the way to the World Series.

U.S. Offers Pakistan Army $2 Billion Aid Package
By ERIC SCHMITT and DAVID E. SANGER
WASHINGTON — Even as the Obama administration moved to stop training and equipping Pakistani Army units that have killed civilians in the offensive against the Taliban, the United States said Friday that it planned increased aid for Pakistan’s military over the next five years.
Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton made the announcement in Washington alongside the Pakistani foreign minister, Shah Mehmood Qureshi, as leaders from both nations convened for a series of meetings.
The new aid package, totaling $2 billion, is meant to replace one that expired Oct. 1. It would complement $7.5 billion in aid that the United States has already pledged to Pakistan for civilian projects, some have which have been directed toward helping the nation recover from the damaging floods

Do Women Sweat Differently Than Men?
Does a hard-working woman sweat like a man? That question, which has figured in many an antiperspirant commercial, has received surprisingly little scientific scrutiny. But a new study published this month in the journal Experimental Physiology provides persuasive evidence that women do sweat copiously during exercise. (Did anyone really believe they misted?) But fit women seem to sweat differently than unfit people of either sex, and quite differently than fit men, a fact that has implications for sports performance. It also may have some bearing on what it has meant, since prehistory, to be female.

Retirement beckons for Pacquiao, says Roach
It only took one serious conversation in training camp for Freddie Roach to be convinced that boxing may be coming to an end for Manny Pacquiao.
Roach recalled a moment during the early part of their preparation for the Filipino southpaw’s November 13 title showdown with Mexican Antonio Margarito.
And with all seriousness, the 50-year-old Roach acknowledged that possible retirement beckons for the seven-time world division boxing champion.
“After the first couple of days of training, Manny came up to me and said: ‘I miss my job.’ And I said: ‘You’re at your job,’ and he said ‘No, I miss Congress.’"

Till I get Over You..
by chinkygiggles
I still can't get over your message,
it just keeps coming back to me
At times I'm feeling okay
but then it will hit me again
and I will start feeling sad&low
You told me to find somebody else,
since you'll just hurt me
After what you have shown me,
you want me to just walk away
It feels really awful
I thought we shared something special,
yet its just so easy for you
to cut me off just like that
I know in time I'll be okay,
its not anytime soon
but eventually I'll get there
and when I finally do,
I hope I can smile, look straight in your eyes,
and say "thank you, I'm over you".
Love Story
A love that Waits Patiently
by Thai
There are things in this world that we can’t even see, sometimes we can’t even touch but we can always feel it within our hearts.
I have a friend. Every morning he wonders. Every day he prays and every night he dreams.
Listen to this story.
This is his tale:
Since the moment I saw her, there hasn’t been a day without her and I think there never will be.
I wish I could just forget and let go. Sometimes we grow stronger not by holding on but by letting go. I don’t know what it is but even though she loves someone else I still can’t be with someone else. Trying to forget someone that you really like is just the same as trying to remember a face that you have never seen before.
When I heard that she has a boyfriend my heart just sank. It took me a few days to accept the truth. In the end I did accept the truth but I felt a bit saddened. My heart was cut deep. I heard that time heals wounds and its true my heart healed itself but everyone knows, a wound always leaves a mark or scar behind.
In time I started to feel happy for her but I was still sad.
Not long after a few months a few friends started to notice that I was feeling quite blue. Of course they knew I was heart broken. People started to question me. What happened? Argument at home? Parents hit you?
I didn’t know what to say I didn’t want them to know.
In the long run my friends did find out. They knew the person I liked. They knew what I was feeling. I wasn’t the type to bring my problems out to the world. I keep them inside & that’s what makes me vulnerable. I use to be able to put on a fake smile and say “I’m ok, everything’s fine” but now that doesn’t work any more.
I decided to break my silence. I admitted to them. Yes I do love her and yes I do feel sad but I am happy for her. It made me feel better. It was good to have friends like them. When birds fly high they become hard to catch but good friends in life was hard to find. I was lucky to find good friends. I’ve only known them for a few months but still I felt as if we’d known each and everyone of us before. I learnt form them that friendship is not determined by time but by how much you value each other. I learnt that its not how long you’ve been together but its how you value each other.
Everyday. Every day I spend so much time thinking about her. She takes up so much of my time I don’t seem to find enough time to think all the other thoughts I want to think. I find the days to short to walk all the walks I want to walk and the nights to little dream of all the things I want to dream of.
All I can do now is watch her from afar and pray for her. If I do any thing else I would be just interfering with her relationship. I’m happy for her. She has everything a girl could ever want. A loving family, great friends and a man to always stand beside her.
Am I in love? I do not know. Is this a crush? I don’t have the answer but what ever it is it just is. Love is so complex. It can’t be seen nor touched but only felt. I guess love is just love. There isn’t any phrase or explanation for it. Love is Love. You can’t explain it and if you can then I guess its not Love after all.
I use to think that if she was happy then I would be happy. And this is true, I am happy for her. There is just this feeling of emptiness I have inside. I am happy for her but why do I feel so lonely and so sad? I ask myself so many questions and searching for answers but in time I find myself asking more then answering them.
I don’t know how to explain it but it is a deep moving feeling.
When we talk we don’t say much at all. Sometimes we don’t even talk but when we leave I feel that I had the best conversation with her ever. There are so many things I want to say to her but I can’t, there are so many things I want to do with her but I can’t. I am only one person and I can’t do everything. Though I can’t do everything I can still do something. For this reason, I won’t say no to do what ever I can to help her when she needs it.
For now I can’t do anything. She has boyfriend. She has a soul mate. I’m here left alone. Some guys are like me, they’re missing a one special person in their life and some other guys have all that they ask for. I hope that the person she’s with gives her the happiness she deserves. I prey that he will love her and cherish her. I wish that they would have a happy life together.
They say that one of the greatest happiness’s in life is to love and be loved. I’m starting to question that theory but am too scared because I still want to believe that that statement is true. It hurts a lot but its true. One of the greatest things to overcome in life Is to watch that special person you love, one of the hardest things in life is to watch the person you love , love someone else.
Nothing. I can nothing but dream of her. Still, that still doesn’t matter because if God only allowed me to see her in my dreams then I’d ask him to let me to sleep forever.
There and only there in my dreams I can say all the things I’ve longed to say to her.
Yes she does love her boyfriend and her boyfriend does love her. True its all true but I’ve decided. Every time I do something I’ll do it for her. I’ll do it for him as well. I’ll do it for the both of them. Every time I laugh, cry and every time I smile it’ll be for her.
I love her. I love her still, I always have and in this life and in the next I always will.
I’ll just dream and wait for now. If things don’t work between them I’ll be ready. When I wake up from my dream I hope that she is lying besides me. I’ll wait for as long as she likes. She can stay in this world for as long as she wants because waiting for her my eternity doesn’t even come close to a second. I’ll wait patiently until that day comes.
She’ll find out one day. She probably already have. When she does find out and if she is still with her boyfriend I hope she understands how I felt. If not then I hope she can remember me and smile. I hope she can remember me and smile and if she can't then id rather have her forget about me then remembering me and crying.
Now I’ll just pray for her. I’ll pray for whoever can hear this and grant me this wish. I pray that she will have a happy life. I pray that all her wishes will come true. I pray that the person she is with will cherish her with his life. I pray happiness for her and for him. For the both of them.
Can this be love? Who knows? I’ll just be friends with her now. I won’t walk in front of her and be her leader. I won’t walk behind her and be her follower but instead I’ll walk besides her and be her friend.
Perhaps I’ll find another love. Perhaps I won’t. Whether I find one or not at this moment I don’t care but for now, I’ll just dream of her in my sleep.I'll sit, I'll wait, I'll wonder, I'll wish, I'll sleep and then I'll dream. I’ll dream of her as if I’ll live forever and when I wake up with her besides me we’ll live life together as if we’d die tomorrow.
I’ll wait patiently until that day.

Malarial mosquitoes are evolving into new species, say researchers
Two strains of the type of mosquito responsible for the majority of malaria transmission in Africa have evolved such substantial genetic differences that they are becoming different species, according to researchers behind two new studies published today in the journal Science.
Over 200 million people globally are infected with malaria, according to the World Health Organisation, and the majority of these people are in Africa. Malaria kills one child every 30 seconds.
Today's international research effort, co-led by scientists from Imperial College London, looks at two strains of the Anopheles gambiae mosquito, the type of mosquito primarily responsible for transmitting malaria in sub-Saharan Africa. These strains, known as M and S, are physically identical. However, the new research shows that their genetic differences are such that they appear to be becoming different species, so efforts to control mosquito populations may be effective against one strain of mosquito but not the other.
