Proposition 19 to Legalize Marijuana Could Go Up In Smoke

By Daniel Prowe

Prop 19, a citizen-sponsored initiative, seems to be losing support as late polling has on 42 per cent of those polled supporting the vote to legalize marijuana. 49 per cent of voters oppose the legislation with a 3.2 per cent margin for error.

As voters go to the polls in today’s Midterm Elections, it is evident that more Californians are uncomfortable with legislating marijuana. However, just a month ago, polling showed that most people did support Proposition 19 so only when the polls close today will the outcome be clear.

Polling around the state show that most of the support is coming from the San Francisco Bay Area and in Northern California while the central regions of the state, typically more conservative, are against it.

Supporters of the bill say that the polling may be inaccurate since many people are uncomfortable telling the pollsters their opinions.

The initiative has had celebrity support as seen on Bill Maher’s show ‘Real Time With Bill Maher,’ where it looked like Zach Galifianakis smoked a joint while a guest on the show. According to the host, no real marijuana was smoked on the set.
