Army offers condolences to soldiers killed in blast

By Associated Press

FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. (AP) — The commander of six American soldiers killed in a suicide bomb attack Sunday in Afghanistan says the military's "sincere condolences go out to families and communities" at Kentucky's Fort Campbell, where the troops were based.

Among those killed when a minibus packed with an estimated 1,000 pounds of explosives slammed into a mud wall and detonated was Cpl. Sean M. Collins of Ewa Beach.

Maj. Gen. John Campbell said during a videoconference from Afghanistan Tuesday that despite the recent high casualties among his 101st Airborne Division, morale remains high.

Campbell says 11 soldiers were wounded in the attack, but many were able to return to duty.

Campbell says the joint NATO-Afghan outpost where the attack happened was in the Taliban's homeland, where the military has launched offensives to clear out insurgents this year.
