City council recognizes Pearl Harbor survivors

By NEIL YOUNG/The Daily News

BULLHEAD CITY — Tuesday’s Bullhead City council meeting coincided with the 69th anniversary of the Pearl Harbor attack. Two Bullhead City-area Pearl Harbor veterans attended a brief ceremony held at the beginning of the council meeting: Don Lee, U.S. Navy, USS Phoenix, who is just shy of his 90th birthday, and Leo Stewart, U.S. Army Air Corps, Wheeler Field. Two other Pearl Harbor vets were not present: Clare Hetrick, U.S. Navy, USS Arizona, was attending a ceremony in Tucson, and Ed Ralston, U.S. Navy, USS MacDonough, was absent due to illness. “We wish him well,” said Bullhead City Mayor Jack Hakim.

The Holiday Tree of Freedom, dedicated by the Military Moms organization, features stars with photos of those serving overseas in the military, as well as those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

The tree will be moved to the lobby of City Hall.

Hakim read a proclamation marking the 10th anniversary of the Bullhead Area Transit System, singling out former council member Jacquie Jessie, who played a key role in creating BATS.

In honor of the anniversary, the council voted to waive all fares on BATS buses and Dial-A-BATS on Dec. 17. Dial-A-BATS passengers must still be on the approved list, with documented medical conditions.

Council members also voted to:

Approve a contract with PCL Civil Contractors of Tempe, Ariz., for $2,094,872 for headworks improvements for the Section 10 wastewater treatment plant.

Approve a contract for $125,000 with Morrison-Maierle to provide construction administration services for the plant.

Approve a contract amendment with AMTI for $16,535 for construction testing services, for the wastewater plant, bringing the total contract to $197,590.50.

Authorized Hakim to sign a letter of support for a federal grant application by River City Shuttle for the operation of a regional shuttle bus service throughout Mohave and La Paz counties.

Change the hours for fireworks usage on New Year’s Eve and July 4 from 5 to 10 p.m. to 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. The changes were made because New Year’s celebrations will center around the midnight hour and, on Independence Day, people would not be inclined to use fireworks before sunset, which occurs around 8 p.m.

Down to the wire

The deadline for turning in petitions to run in the Bullhead City March primary is 5 p.m. today.

Mayor Jack Hakim and council members Sam Medrano and Kathy Bruck are running for re-election. Two new candidates have jumped in at the last minute: Mike Sirchia and Felix Romant are both running for council seats. As of Tuesday, Hakim and Bruck had already turned in their petitions, according to City Clerk Diane Heilmann. A minimum of 159 and maximum of 317 signatures are required to get on the ballot. Heilmann said she will scan the petitions to make sure the voters are Bullhead City residents.
