Hostage Crisis: 'No indicators' that Wis. student was distressed

Marinette, Wis. — Sam Hengel appeared to be a happy, straight-A student who liked the outdoors and was liked by others.

But the 15-year-old Marinette High School student took hostage his classmates and a teacher on Monday and, after a standoff that lasted more than six hours, shot himself in the head. He died Tuesday.

Ed Carviou, who lived next door to the Hengel family, said he never saw any disturbing behavior from the boy.

"Something had to snap," Carviou said.
