Wikileaks cables prompt White House to tighten security

The White House has ordered security to be tightened around the US military computer network at the centre of the biggest leak of diplomatic cables in history.

Amid criticism that data-sharing had become too open, the White House Office told federal agencies to establish “security assessment teams” to ensure that employees do not have access to classified information other than what they require for their jobs.

The crackdown started on Sunday night, when the Pentagon announced it had already drawn up new procedures for protecting data.

US Defence Department officials said they were disabling all “write” capability to removable media such as thumb drives or disks, which it is suspected were used in the WikiLeaks case, on the department’s classified computers.
